Ward 8 opposes question 1

At last week’s meeting of the Medford Ward 8 Democratic Committee, the membership voted unanimously to join the Medford Democratic City Committee in opposing this November’s ballot question 1. The question would eliminate the state income tax, costing the state approximately 40% of its annual revenue. The Coalition For Our Communities estimates that eliminating the state income tax would lead to the Medford Public Schools losing 71% of their state funding and the city losing over $10 million (65%) of its state funding. This would guarantee a dramatic increase in property taxes, major cuts in city and school programs, and a bunch of new taxes and fees at the state and local levels to help pay for the deficit.

This is a reckless idea, and the ward 8 committee strongly encourages all voters to vote no on question 1 in November. We also encourage you to help spread the word through phone banks, sign holding, and/or lawn signs.

Bus to New Hampshire this Saturday

This Saturday, October 11, Rep. Markey is running a bus to Dover, New Hampshire to campaign for Sen. Obama. The bus will leave City Hall at 8:45. Call Kate at Rep. Markey’s office at 781-395-3880 to sign up or for more information.

One-stop voter registration

The Obama campaign has a new website, VoteForChange.com, where you can register to vote, request an absentee ballot, and find your polling location. This works throughout the country, so if you know someone who isn’t yet registered or needs some assistance leading up to the election, send them the link!

National Anthem: Concert for Obama

Classical musicians from greater Boston (including at least a couple from Medford) have organized a fundraising concert for the Barack Obama campaign. The concert will be held this Friday, September 12, at 8 p.m. at Jordan Hall in Boston. See the flyer for more details
